1. Ukrainian air defences shot down all 24 Shahed-type attack drones launched during a Russian attack overnight on May 22, Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk said. The drones were reportedly launched from the Russian port town of Primorsko-Akhtarsk, located on the coast of the Sea of Azov, from occupied Crimea, and Russia's Kursk Oblast.
Aircraft, missile and electronic warfare units and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Air Force intercepted the drones over Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Sumy, and Odesa oblasts, Oleshchuk said.
Russian troops reportedly conducted air strikes on the towns of Shostka and Konotop in Sumy Oblast overnight, leaving several settlements without electricity.
2. During the meeting with Safari on the sideline of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Tuesday, Wang once again expressed condolences and sympathy over the martyrdom of Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a recent helicopter crash.
In this difficult time, China firmly stands by Iranian friends, and believes that under the leadership of Ayatollah Khamenei, the Iranian government and people will turn their grief into strength, resolutely advance their established strategies and maintain national stability and development, Wang said.
Regardless of how the situation changes, he added that China will continue to strengthen strategic cooperation with Iran, safeguard common interests, and make endeavours for regional and world peace.
3. The Biden administration is closely watching how Iran reacts to the sudden death of its president, expecting the regional status quo to hold while still wary that one allegation could escalate tensions with Israel.
For now, senior U.S. officials expect few if any changes in the way of Iran’s policies before the Islamist-led country elects a new president following the weekend helicopter crash that killed Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian.
Washington is watching to see how Iran handles the political crisis and what it means for the supreme leader competition, the timing of which could depend on Khamenei’s health. But the Biden administration believes Iran will be too gripped with its immediate conundrums to make major changes to its regional policies, including its aid to proxy forces that bedevil many Arab states, Israel and the United States.
4. Brussels officials insist on starting official negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union as early as June. Politico spoke with five diplomats on the condition of anonymity.
They reported that intensive work is currently underway to persuade the Hungarian government to agree to start negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. It is proposed to start official negotiations on Ukraine's accession on 25 June. Politico’s sources believe that this will bring moral uplift to Ukraine, which is resisting Russian aggression.
5. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who was in the crash of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter, will be buried in Tehran on Thursday.
