In the premiere episode, "The Vindicator," a newspaper reporter (Claude Akins) talks to McCord about the Bitter Creek massacre and wants to write a follow-up piece. McCord won't help. He knows that General James Reed, McCord's mentor, went to Bitter Creek to meet with Cheyenne leaders as part of a peace mission. A bunch of rogue Indians called Dog Soldiers ambushed his regiment of 31 men. During the fight, McCord understood that the old general had lost his mind. McCord took over, but it was too late. The conflict left McCord hurt and left for dead, yet he was the only one who lived. After the attack, he was in a coma for 10 days. Later, McCord was put on trial by a court-martial for leaving the Army without permission, found guilty, and kicked out of the Army.
