This 300 Year Old Olive Tree Wrecked Our Patio

Описание: When we bought our Greek island home, the small courtyard had character — but also chaos. A 300-year-old olive tree had broken up our patio, leaving us with uneven slabs, tripping hazards, and a major backyard makeover on our hands. This is the start of a brand Saving Sweet William project where we take on one of our biggest Greek house renovation projects to date.

We’re lifting broken paving, clearing the space, and reimagining the courtyard using porphyry crazy paving, inspired by traditional Mediterranean patios we’ve seen across the Ionian Islands. And instead of sand, we’re using marble powder mortar — a technique we didn’t expect, but it turns out it’s a local favourite for a smoother, longer-lasting finish.

This renovation blends Greek island life, DIY landscaping, and creative reuse, all on a real-life budget. Along the way, we’ll show you our design inspirations from around Zante (Zakynthos), the unexpected twists of working with ancient olive trees, and what it’s really like taking on a courtyard renovation in Greece as a couple.
