Recently San Bernardino County Fire Protection District hosted a product demonstration which uses sound waves to suppress fires.

Ohio-based Sonic Fire Tech presented a demonstration to County Fire officials, featuring its system that uses sound to disrupt the chemistry of a fire, with the waves disrupting the consumption of oxygen as the fire tries to spread.

Surprisingly quiet, the demo highlighted two versions of the product: one designed to be installed along the outside of a structure. This is the version shown in our video, where a fire starts, triggering a sensor that kicks on the sound generator, aiming sound at the burning vegetation. The other product was a mobile backpack-style version meant to be portable.

In each case, the technology is designed to keep fires small, to disrupt their ability to spread before they have a chance to cause major damage. The company states that this technology avoids the hazards of needing water supply or extinguishing chemicals to put out fires.

County Fire’s commitment to exploring innovation and new technology makes it a leader in our region. We will continue to train on traditional firefighting procedures as we look at ways we can approach the future of firefighting.
