HF radio isn’t just for hams. Airline pilots rely on high-frequency bands—from 2800 kHz to 22 MHz—for long-distance communication with shore stations during oceanic flights. These transmissions, which can be received with any HF SSB tuner, offer fascinating insights into global aviation and make excellent indicators of HF propagation conditions. Some aircraft are even transmitting PSK over HF!
This video features a tracking demo I gave to the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club, following a flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Sydney (SYD). I also share tools and tips for tracking and listening to oceanic flights—whether or not you have a radio.
