Oh what happened to the piano man
I haven’t heard him play in a long time
I presumed he took a holiday
His piano sits there it seems such a crime

Oh what happened to the piano man
I was here when he began
Downstairs in the piano bar I heard him play
He embraced a melody that moved you I must say

The last time I heard the piano man was late June
He used to play his melodies
In the evenings and sometimes late afternoons
The piano man always livened up the room with his tunes

It’s a little after ten, the piano man is nowhere to be seen
I miss the sound he brought to the crowd
The piano bar has fallen silent, maybe for the last time
I was lucky enough to hear him I certainly felt proud

Out the back the workers moved all about
The house lights came down it was all too much
And the piano man broke the silence
I heard the piano keys and that familiar touch

Then the rise brought a night to remember
He played his melodies
Like he did evenings and late afternoons
The piano man knew all the good tunes

His wife used to sit over there but she was nowhere to be seen
That’s probably why Billy said
He was playing his melodies songs from the seventies
Brought back so many memories he knows what he’s talking about
His songs tonight has the sound of love but it carries some pain
His ivory told us his story of his life down but he was feeling free
The piano man asked the crowd
Sitting on sofas stools or standing at the bar to raise a glass
Piano man sing us your tune they said good to have you back
Oh la de la de la de la
Thank god for a tune it couldn’t have come too soon
Oh la de la de la de la
Oh la de la de la de la la la la
Billy raised his glass
