The Hotel That Killed the Mrs. Astor | A Gilded Age War Story

Описание: In 1890, William Waldorf Astor — the richest man in America — was so humiliated by his aunt Caroline Astor's social snubs that he demolished his own mansion at 33rd and Fifth and built a 13-story luxury hotel *directly next door to her home*. His goal: force "The Mrs. Astor" to smell cooking grease, hear delivery wagons at dawn, and watch commercial guests walk past her parlor windows. Within three years, she fled. The hotel he built to destroy her became the most prestigious address in America. Then, in 1929, both buildings were demolished to build the Empire State Building — and the name migrated uptown to Park Avenue, where "Waldorf-Astoria" still means something today.
