LaRue Pine Hills Snake Road Q & A:
1. How long and rugged is this trail? This trail is a Forest Service Road (closed during migration, open to foot traffic only) that is 2.7 miles gate to gate. It is an out and back hike. If you walk from gate to gate and back, it will be a little over 5 miles. The road is fairly flat with some very minor elevation. The trail is made up of gravel and not very rugged.
2. Are there trails in the forest around Snake Road? There are user-made and abandoned Forest Service trails within the gated portion of Snake Road. It is highly recommended that you stay on the road at all times. Getting off the road will significantly increase your chance of coming into close contact with snakes.
3. What kind of snake will you see? The majority of snakes that you will see are cottonmouth snakes which are venomous and bites can result in death if not treated properly. There are also other venomous snakes present including the copperhead and the timber rattlesnake. Other snakes that you might see are water snakes, rough green snakes, ribbon snakes, Dekays snake, ringneck snakes, earth snakes and worm snakes. Some snakes are very rare to see including mud snakes, scarlet snakes (seen once), flathead snakes and hognose.
4. What are the rules of the road? NEVER harm, harass, handle or block egress of any wildlife in the area. The entire area is a protected ecological area meaning the rules apply outside of the gated road as well. When the gates are closed - only foot traffic is allowed. Motorized vehicles, pack animals and bicycles are PROHIBITED and can threaten wildlife. Collection tools such as hooks, tongs and bags are illegal on Snake Road. Please report illegal activity to Forest Service Law Enforcement is you see it. If you see something, say something.
5. Any further suggestions? Use bug spray. Mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies and gnats are more present at this area than other parts of the forest due to the swampy conditions. It is advised to wear pants. Stinging nettle, poison ivy and sticker bush is common off the road. Bring plenty of water as there are no sources of drinkable water in this area. The north trailhead provides more parking than the south trailhead. There are no restrooms at this site. This is a day-use only site - camping is not allowed. If the area is undergoing flooding, some roads leading to Snake Road may be closed.
