After The Eternal City I spent a few days in the Castelli Romani area, in the Roman countryside south of Rome. This was my second stop on my odyssey by train down the Mediterranean coast of Italy from Rome to Sicily between the end of May and early July of 2021.
For centuries Romans have come to this part of Lazio to escape the summer heat of Rome and enjoy the cooler, breezier air around Lake Albano and Lake Nemi. The landscape is marvelously picturesque and dotted with many charming villages -- the “Castelli Romani.”
Visiting the Castelli Romani was special because it was one of the few times during my trip that I had company. My friend Marco, a professional driver who lives and works in Rome, took me around to Ariccia, Nemi, Frascati, and Castel Gandolfo.
FRASCATI
In Frascati I was enchanted by Villa Aldobrandini with its elegant architecture, expansive lawns, and graceful wrought-iron fences, albeit from afar, as it is closed for renovations for the time being. Going back to visit the villa when it is open again has been added to The List, as is meeting up with Marco again do some wine tasting.
NEMI & LAKE NEMI / CASTEL GANDOLFO & LAKE ALBANO
Nemi is reknowned for a liqueur called Fragolino, made from wild strawberries. The hamlet sits on a ridge high above Lake Nemi, which is still unspoiled, and the views are breathtaking, as are the views of Lake Albano from Castel Gandolfo. You might be familiar with Castel Gandolfo because the summer residence of the Popes is there, and can now be visited by the public, thanks to Pope Francis.
