The Toledo Vacuum and Fuel Pump Pressure Tester is a simple but effective kit to diagnose all kinds of problems, and keep your engine in tune.

This tool has been designed with the professional in mind – featuring a large 90mm gauge which is factory calibrated for optimal precision. Using one of the four solid brass adaptors, and the 750mm heavy duty rubber hose; it’s easy to perform a vacuum test on all types of petrol powered machinery.

For a basic vacuum test, locate a point on the inlet manifold to attach your gauge. Disconnecting a hose which runs to an ancillary function (such as power steering) is ideal. Just remember to reconnect it when you’re done.

Check that the hose to your gauge is not kinked. And, ensure that the vehicle is in park or neutral, with the handbrake on, and chock the wheels before starting the engine.

Once the engine is at operating temperature, an accurate reading can be obtained. A normal engine reading should be between 17 and 22 inches of mercury. Inches of mercury being the measurement of vacuum shown on the gauge.

A slow fluctuation between 14 and 22 inches of mercury could indicate a vacuum leak, or carburettor out of adjustment. Wide fluctuations at high revs indicate weak valve springs. And a steady drop to zero indicates a choked exhaust. Studying the values obtained can help you accurately identify these problems and many more.

You can also use this tool to test low pressure electric and mechanical fuel pumps. To achieve this; disconnect the fuel outlet line at the pump. Use a suitable adaptor to connect the rubber hose from your gauge - to the fuel pump outlet. Run the engine, and note the reading on the gauge before the engine stops. This pressure should hold for one or two minutes after the engine cuts out. Check the reading against factory specification using a workshop manual.

Testing the vacuum of a fuel pump follows much the same process, except in this case – the gauge is connected to the fuel pump at the fuel inlet. If the gauge reaches 10 inches of mercury before the engine cuts out, your fuel pump is working properly.
