G-BYGG was the last 747-400 delivered to British Airways in April 1999 and was just 22 years old when it was withdrawn, along with the 30+ other 747s in the BA fleet, in June 2020 following the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic.
Configured in "Super High" 14F /86J /30/145M layout the aircraft had only completed 89,400 flying hours at retirement - well below others in the fleet such as G-CIVA which had covered more than 120,000 hours over its' life.
The aircraft had been at London Heathrow until 3 June 2020, when it flew to Cardiff Wales and on 23 November 2020, it took its' final flight from Cardiff to St Athan. I filmed it in September 2021- just one month before it was broken up.
Fortunately as can be seen in the film, the upper deck was removed and rescued from scrap before the rest of the aircraft was broken up. The upper deck was bought by the company "744 Experience" and was completely restored into a fully authentic BA Club World Upper Deck, with seating, lighting, in flight entertainment etc exactly matching the original working Upper Deck on BA's 747s. In addition the company purchased and restored the cockpit, instruments and avionics from fellow 747; G-CIVM; making a unique recreation of the BA 747.
Available for hire, this immersive 747 experience can be booked via 744experience.co.uk based in Tattenhall, Cheshire, United Kingdom.
