We are taught that the answers to difficult problems are often complex. Perhaps that is not always the case, and sometimes we may find those answers to be both simple and found in unexpected places. In this talk Ruth Murray shares how as a nurse and determined mother she searched for both medical and non-medical solutions to help her own family. She was astonished to find it was ‘movement’ as a therapy that was the answer she had been looking for. Specifically Rhythmic Movement Therapy or Rhythmic Brain Therapy, which has been studied with effect on everything from difficulties with reading to ADAHD. These gentle activities and actions had profound results. What the movements did were mimic some of our movements as babies, that in turn played an important role in stimulating and developing the earliest developmental part of our conscious and unconscious nervous system. The movements help to build mastery of basic skills and subtasks that become the building blocks of every day major tasks. Such as before hitting a baseball with a baseball bat, we need to have mastered how to stand sideways, coordinate our hands on the bat, and position the bat above our shoulder, then we need to be able to turn our head sideways, keep our eye focused on a point (the batter). Those are lots of smaller movements we learn. Only then are we able to coordinate all of those smaller movements together, to follow the ball as it leaves the batters hand and then coordinate our movement to hit (or not) the ball. Ruth Murray is a a nurse and developmental movement therapist. Because three of her children’s development wasn’t typical, she began a quest for explanations and solutions to resolve baffling symptoms that didn’t fit traditional diagnoses. She found astonishing answers that explained and provided life-changing help, not only for her family but for people who struggled with a wide variety of learning, neurological and mental health issues. She is the creator of the Developmental Pyramid, which illustrates to professionals and others, why there are so many who struggle to accomplish life tasks, and points to solutions that can help us all.
Talk Focus area: Exploring the use of alternative methods of medical support that do not include tablets, therapy or surgery. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
