Active Surveillance Patients International (ASPI) hosts guest speakers Professor Freddie Hamdy (University of Oxford) and Professor Jenny Donovan (University of Bristol) — the lead investigators of the groundbreaking ProtecT Trial (Prostate Testing for Cancer and Treatment).
This long, complex, and historic study followed 1,634 men over 25 years, proving that monitoring selected prostate cancer patients can be as safe as immediate treatment with surgery or radiation — forever changing how prostate cancer is managed worldwide.
ASPI extends special thanks to Professors Hamdy and Donovan, their research teams, and especially the thousands of men who made this study possible.

KEY POINTS
✅ The ProtecT Trial proved that Active Monitoring, Surgery, and Radiation all led to equally low prostate cancer mortality over 15 years (~3%).
✅ Immediate treatment reduces metastasis risk (10% → 5%) but carries lasting side effects, while monitoring spares many men unnecessary treatment.
✅ About 40% of men never needed radical therapy, and a quarter never needed any treatment at all.
✅ Quality of life remained similar across groups—though urinary and sexual function differed long-term.
✅ Results confirm that Active Surveillance is a safe, evidence-based option for most men with low-risk and selected intermediate-risk disease.
✅ The trial’s insights continue to guide global standards, proving that doing less can often mean living better.
