If you do even a small amount of maintenance on guns, eventually you're going to need to loosen, tighten, replace, or otherwise work with screws. And for that, says Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant, you need a high-quality, properly fitting set of gunsmithing screwdrivers. The problem with a screwdriver that's too large is obvious, but a screwdriver bit that's TOO SMALL for the screw slot can slip and damage the firearm's finish or mangle up the slot. A "properly fitting" screwdriver bit is thick enough that it fits snug and doesn't wobble in the slot, and long enough to fill the entire screw slot end to end. The outside edges of the screwdriver blade transfer most of the torque to the screw. A driver that isn't wide enough to fill the entire slot requires more torque to move the screw. Applying that torque to the inside of the slot greatly increases the risk of tearing up the screw slot OR breaking the driver bit. Caleb shows us on his sample gun how an improperly fitting screwdriver can damage gun screw heads (he was not the perpetrator!).
Moral to the story: invest in good-quality gunsmithing screwdrivers like a Brownells MAGNA-TIP® set!
