Creating a car trunk first aid kit is one of the best ways to always be prepared for upcoming summer road trips and vacations. The cost can be minimal if you shop at big box or dollar stores and you can make it as big or as small as you like. Taking recommendations from the Red Cross and our own experience Rick and I built what we think is the best first aid kit for our needs. The investment is worth it. Especially when you consider what can befall you on the road. It is always better to be prepared!
So, we are building this for you today and will take it and keep it in the trunk of the car for future trips and safety. It was not expensive to put together and the cost of having this and not needing it is priceless compared to not having the contents and needing it in an emergency.
Being prepared is a great thing to be. Because it is better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it. We try to live a prepared lifestyle. We usually have supplies on hand but don’t travel that much. We prepared for our road trip with detail and had everything we needed. We were fortunate that we were able to stop when necessary and get what we found we needed or forgot, which was very little. This first aid kit is a great way to be prepared not only to help yourself, but to help others who may be in distress or in need that you may encounter on your travels.
I started out by referring to the list that the Red Cross has compiled for a first aid kit. While we did not include some of their recommendations. We also took from our own experience. Here is a link to the list on the Red Cross website; https://rdcrss.org/2H3940t
We included a lightweight shower curtain that can act as a tarp, a ground cover, or a rain poncho. A variety of tools including scissors, tweezers, clippers, a small sewing kit, a non-glass/non-mercury thermometer and an emery board. A dozen pair of disposable gloves rolled in pairs and placed six in each of two sandwich bags. A supply of gauze bandages and tape for dressing wounds. A couple of instant cold packs. A magnifying glass, N95 rated face masks, first aid cream, cortisone cream, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, aloe Vera gel, sunscreen, homemade insect repellant, pain relievers and stomach aids. We also included a sharpie marker but neglected to show it.
You should include things that you need or use on a regular basis, as well. Add to or take away from this suggestion. We know what we use and what we need when we feel ookey. You should do the same. We have placed all the contents in a large plastic box that has a snap on lid with a handle that will make it easy to grab and go when necessary.
Be aware of the expiration dates on your medications. All of ours expire in 2020 or 2021. In about six months we will take them out and replace them. Bring in what was in the car and use it in our regular household supply. This way we always have fresh in the car. You want to be careful to stay up to date on those things. Temperature fluctuation can be a problem on the shelf life of medicines.
I hope that this was helpful, and I hope you will be encouraged to build your own car first aid kit! Customize to your own needs and always have the peace of mind that you will have what you need when you need it to help your family, yourself, or others.
If you would like to see the homemade insect repellent, please leave a comment and we will be happy to share in another video!
