Afghans who helped Korean gov't arrive in S. Korea Thursday

Hundreds of Afghan evacuees landed in South Korea.
Part of the country's efforts to help those who seek to escape the Taliban rule.
They arrived later than originally planned... due to a stricter security screening process.

378 Afghans who have worked with the Korean government, as well as their families,... landed safely in South Korea on Thursday on-board a Korean military plane, from a stopover in Islamabad.
These people have worked with South Korea for years in Afghanistan... at the embassy, hospitals and vocational training centers.
They sought help due to concerns about possible retaliation by the Taliban.
The plane was originally expected to arrive in the morning, but was delayed due to a stricter screening process.

"We are aware that our people have a lot of concerns regarding issues of security and identifying the evacuees. So the government has made thorough security checks to ensure that there isn't the slightest concern. That's why it took longer."

A total of 391 Afghans are set to be brought to Korea, and the remaining 13 left Islamabad on Thursday.
They will arrive in South Korea on Friday afternoon, on-board another military plane... as the Korean government had sent three planes for the evacuation.

Korean officials, including Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, said nearly half of the 391 Afghans are children.
According to defense ministry official Kim Man-ki, among the evacuees are some 100 infants, and around 80 children aged between 6 and 10.
They also include babies who were born this month.
Sources say they are reportedly in good condition.

"Having said that, officials dismissed the possibility of any of the evacuees having ties to the Taliban, adding that they have gone through a strict screening process."
