The other Guangzhou runs on a different clock. Grandmothers haggling over bitter melon in Tongde Road market. Barbers working open-air shopfronts in the old Xiguan lanes. Neighbourhood temples wedged between concrete blocks, incense still burning. This is the city that feeds itself, argues with itself, and gets on with it entirely indifferent to whether you're watching.

Guangzhou is China's third-largest city and the capital of Guangdong province, with over 18 million people in the urban area. As the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine and culture, it sits culturally distinct from Beijing and Shanghai louder, more mercantile, proudly local. The old neighbourhoods of Liwan and Haizhu preserve a pre-reform streetlife that's disappearing fast everywhere else.
