There’s actually a lot of truth in this post! It’s exactly why I always say: TCM and Daoism are deeply intuitive—if you’re really paying attention and observing. In TCM we know how foundational the Shen is—our spirit, our mind—how mental health shows up in our vitality, our clarity, our glow. It is said to “shine through the eyes.” The Shen is also related to the Heart.
In Daoist or Chinese face reading, we also see that when someone’s mental or emotional world is off, the eyes often tell the story. Dull, lifeless eyes—or eyes that expose more of the whites under the iris (this thing sometimes called “sanpaku” or “3 whites”)—are considered inauspicious. They can point to anxiety, disturbance, imbalance. Not surprising to find in someone who is going through a heartbreaking situation.
So next time you meet someone whose eyes don’t feel alive, don’t write it off—it may just be that the world inside them is heavy. Observing these subtle signals is one of the most ancient superpowers of wellness.
