This 1960 unclassified US Navy Training Film (MN8772b) goes over the important elements of hub mechanism maintenance. It begins by showing the tests needed to see whether the hub system needs maintenance in the first place, which entails either a pressure test or visual inspection by a diver. This is followed by detailed footage from a dry dock showing how the hub mechanism is removed from the propeller shaft, taken apart, put back together, and reattached to it.

0:14 US Navy Training Film, Wilding Inc. MN8772b 1960, 0:23 “Ships’ Controllable Pitch Propellers – Hub Mechanism Maintenance”, 0:34 USS Laffey (DD-459) sailing, 0:58 sailors operating the propellers, 1:25 the gravity feed tank oil gauge, 1:30 sailors conduct a minimum operating pressure test, 2:18 USS Laffey sailing ahead during the test, 2:30 pressure gauges, 2:43 USS Terrebonne Parish (LST-1156) sailing ahead, 3:03 a diver examining the hub and propeller of the ship, 3:47 a ship in the dry dock having its hub removed, 4:06 sailors preparing the ship for hub removal, 4:34 maintenance crews removing the hub on both ship models and checking for damages on the propeller structure, 6:41 the hub being transported on a forklift, 7:00 mechanics taking the hub apart, 9:44 the basic elements of the hub mechanism after it was taken apart, 10:43 animation showing the dangerous phenomenon of “tilting”, 11:21 mechanic looks at thrust and crank ring for wear and tear both visually and with a micrometer, 12:17 mechanic examining degree of contact between thrust and crank ring and then scrapping pieces to ensure a desired fit, 13:19 mechanics measure pins to ensure that there is enough clearance, 14:30 mechanics begin reassembling the hub mechanism, 15:35 mechanics reinstall hub mechanism on propeller shaft, 17:31 mechanics reinstall the blades, 18:08 sailor opens valves to ensure oil flows properly, 18:26 sailor performs pre-launch hub pressure test to see if oil is leaking, 19:02 USS Laffey sailing, 19:10 summary footage showing signs to look out for that could indicate hub system problems, 20:03 Sea Power for Security, THE END, Unclassified

In marine propulsion, a variable-pitch propeller is a type of propeller with blades that can be rotated around their long axis to change the blade pitch. Reversible propellers—those where the pitch can be set to negative values—can also create reverse thrust for braking or going backwards without the need to change the direction of shaft revolution. A controllable pitch propeller (CPP) can be efficient for the full range of rotational speeds and load conditions, since its pitch will be varied to absorb the maximum power that the engine is capable of producing. When fully loaded, a vessel will need more propulsion power than when empty. By varying the propeller blades to the optimal pitch, higher efficiency can be obtained, thus saving fuel. A vessel with a VPP can accelerate faster from a standstill and can decelerate much more effectively, making stopping quicker and safer. A CPP can also improve vessel maneuverability by directing a stronger flow of water onto the rudder.

However, a fixed variable-pitch propeller (FVPP) is both cheaper and more robust than a CPP.

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
