In this video Dr. Kaitlin Schwan explains that homelessness is a condition where people lack access to permanent and affordable housing that is safe, secure, and able to meet their needs. She notes that homelessness exists along a continuum, from absolutely homeless on one end to being in core housing need on the other. Dr. Schwan argues that within a Canadian context it is critical to understand Indigenous homelessness and points towards the definition developed by Jesse Thistle that identifies 12 dimensions. Dr. Schwan concludes by noting that the 2019 National Housing Strategy Act declared housing to be a human right, and that we need to understand homelessness as a violation of this right.
