LEAD-IN:
Traffic police in the Northwestern state of Gujarat in India are getting a high-tech makeover.
Designers are using the latest fabrics in a bid to combat searing temperatures while maintaining comfort and style.
STORYLINE:
In Gujarat India summer conditions prevail for almost ten months of the year.
Temperatures average around 35 degrees celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).
For the traffic cop on the street, this means hours in the direct sunlight on hot roadways.
A designer at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad is helping to improve the comfort and image of the traffic cop.
Somesh Singh is the Head of the Institute's Apparel Design and Merchandising Department.
He is attempting to give the 150-year-old uniform an updated style.
Singh has designed special features in the uniform to provide much-needed relief from the weather.
The lighter fabric has been given five special finishes, each designed to meet a certain need of the wearer.
The new features will add 5 to 10 percent to the existing cost of the uniform.
The uniforms will have an anti-wrinkle finish and a cool finish that will help the wearer feel two to five degrees cooler than the actual temperature.
Another finish will provide protection from ultra-violet rays of the sun.
