I am putting together a series of posts, Navigation 101 series, as part of UnpackingRally and DecodingDakar..
Are their specific navigation/rally questions or themes that you would like me to cover? Drop them in the comments or send me a message.
This post looks at the anatomy of a note.
(1) - Roadbook page number - more relevant for cars/SxS than bikes.
(2) Roadbook header with Selective Sector/Leg number (without the word "Page”), name of the Selective Sector/Leg and the total kilometres of the Selective Sector/Leg.
(3) Total kilometre from the first box (4) of each page to the finish of the Selective Sector/Leg.
(4) Total kilometre of the selective sector or leg at the corresponding diagram box.
(5) Partial kilometre from the previous diagram box to the actual diagram box.
(6) Placeholder for waypoint icon
(7) Diagram box: gives information in graphic form and with symbols to assess the situation at the indicated kilometre.
(8) Description box: indication about the situation after the indicated kilometer, including speed limits.
See next image to put it in practice:
In this example:
(1) - Page 49 of the roadbook, in this case relevant for cars/SxS, as bikes have a scroll.
(2) Stage number and name, in this case for Car-SSV-Truck
(3) Distance to go to finish.
(4) At the intersection of 4 tracks, with a tree on your right, your odometer should be at 266.68 km. This is a perfect spot to reset your odo, should it be off, as you have a specific immovable object, like the tree, to verify your position.
(5) You are 410 meters from your last note/instruction.
(6) There is no waypoint at this instruction.
(7) You are in a dry riverbed/wash, at an intersection of 4 tracks. You have to turn/veer right at the intersection just past the tree. Once you have made the turn, your compass heading should read 290 deg.
(8) After 500 meters, so at odometer reading 267,18 km or 267.2 if we round, your compass heading should be 250 degrees. Indicating a 40 degree change in course over 500 meters to the left.
This note does not give enough information to tell us if it will be Oblic (gradual) or if it would be a turn, intersection, etc, so it is safe to assume that the 250 heading after 500m is more there as a confirmation that you are on the correct track than anything else.
However, there are many other ways this situation can play out, such as in an Oblic note, or when it acts as a combined note, in which case it might be an actual turn, or you might be confronted with an intersection.
These finer details we go into in the more advanced lessons.
