DeSoto’s Claude Mathis Responds to Move from 6A to 5A

UIL Realignment (2026–2028) just shifted the balance of power across Texas.

DeSoto moves from 6A Division II District 11, “The District of Doom,” to 5A Division I District 8. After 3 state titles in 4 years under Claude Mathis, the whispers have already started.

New district. Same standard. The State is watching.

Desoto’s Head Football Coach, Claude Mathis, has taken the Eagles to win (3) 6A State Championships in the last 4 years. Notably, in 2024, Desoto appealed to UIL to remain in 6A although their enrollment dropped below the threshold. This fact has people whispering about Desoto winning 5A Championships for at least the next 2 seasons. Coach Mathis quickly dispelled any confusion about overconfidence from his coaching staff and players.
