The Constant Lover, from the Dancing Master, the Third Volume, 1726, was reconstructed as a triple-minor longways by Andrew Shaw in "The Irish Howle: Interpretations of 18th Century English Country Dances." Its tune, composed by the Frenchman Jean-Joseph Mouret, has a colorful and varied history, which Andrew relates in his footnotes. The dance, as it turns out, has the same title as one published by Walsh (1718) and reconstructed by Fried Herman in "The Road to Ruin," but they are entirely different dances.
In this version, among other differences, the 1s progress to second place with an unusual move, 1st Man turning left in 1 bar of the B1 music as 1st Woman crosses the set at the end of the mirror hey to join partner, this being followed by a brief 2-bar cast in a skater's hold. The final bar of the 4-bar phrase has the 1st Woman take the lead, leaving the 1s proper in 2nd place, ready for the R-hand star with the 3s below.
Many thanks to Orly Krasner for her thorough teaching, to Cynthia Shaw (no relation to Andrew) for her lovely playing and to the dancers for their attentive, polished dancing. --Paul Ross
