One of the most destructive volcanoes in recent times is located offshore of the island of New Britain. There, a steep submarine cliff which is as much as 3,300 feet or 1,000 meters deep, encompassing the rim of a massive underwater caldera. Known as Tavui, this volcano is equally as dangerous to the better known Rabaul volcano which also contains a caldera. Despite only having produced two known eruptions, this volcano appears to exclusively produce large explosive eruptions.
