On June 2nd, 1692, the first day of the Court of Oyer and Terminer held in Salem, the Attorney General and Clerk of the Court Thomas Newton and Stephen Sewell, respectively, both swore oaths that they would perform their duties as required.
Here's the oath administered to Thomas Newton. "You, Thomas Newton, gentlemen, being appointed to perform the office of their majesty's attorney general in the prosecution of the several persons to be indicted and tried before their majesty's justices of Oyer and Terminer, now sitting, and from time to time to sit, by virtue of the commission now published, and in all other matters that may be requisite in the execution of the same, do swear that, according to your best skill, you will act truly, you will act truly, Ian faithfully on their majesty's behalf as to law and justice, do without any favor or affection, so help you God, Salem, June 2nd, 1692. Thomas Newton took the oath above said in open court before me, William Stoughton."
And now the oath administered to Steven Sewell. "You being appointed to officiate as clerk of this court do swear that you will carefully uprightly and truly execute and perform whatsoever unto your duty in that place of a clerk does. So help you God. Salem, June 2nd, 1692. Stephen Sewell, in open court, made oath, as above, to do the duty of his place as clerk. Coram me, William Stoughton."
