Italian motorhome adventure to Morfasso in the Province of Piacenza, north Italy

Описание: In this episode we meet our good friends Gino and Marjorie in Carpeneto Piacenza. After meeting at the rendezvous point they show us the way to their place which is up in the mountains near Morfasso. Gino’s father was born in this area and Gino and Marjorie have bought two houses there that they are in the process of renovating. The houses are made of a beautiful honey coloured stone and typical of the area. The houses have come with a lot of land which is parcelled into plots around the house and also up in the nearby forest.

They welcome us with so much food and drink it is hard to remember the courses. There is anti pasta of mortadella and ham, platters of buffalo mozzarella with herb tomatoes and basil. We have a traditional bean dish, potatoe pie and also a game pie made from wild boar. This is all washed down with the local Guttornio sparkling red wine. The table is groaning with food. It is great to catch up with them.

I started working full time as a nurse lecturer at Wrexham University on exactly the same day as Marjorie did on the 1st April 2003. I have been fortunate to write a couple of books with Marjorie on study skills in nurse education. She took me under her wing as she is a prolific writer of nursing text books. We became great friends and worked together in two different universities, Wrexham and Bangor.

The next day we visit the local Roman ruins at Velleia Romana. This ancient Roman city is only a stones throw away from where they live. This is amongst the most important Roman cities of its time in the Lugugano Val d’Arta on the Eastern Piacenza hills. The excavation of this area found the largest bronze inscription in the Roman world. There are the ruins of houses and shops and a columned area for the events held here with many of the columns still standing. Either side of the columned area are two rose marble tables and benches with carved lions heads and feet. There is an Antiquarium that holds many of the important artfifacts found in the area with explanations of the finds. We had a coffee in the café there.

We visit the Mignano Dam and learn that it had been originally planned as a hydroelectricity plant before becoming a reservoir for the valley.

Then we head into Lugagna, Val d’Arta to the Firefly Trattoria and Pizzeria for the most delicious pizza and a litre of house white which has a lovely almost apple flavour. We have a lovely chat over our meal, Rob orders a viagra pizza! That gives great cause for hilarity.

After our meal we were going to a castle to walk it off but rain stopped play. We head up into the beautiful mountain forest to a restaurant and hotel, Locanda del Piccio, which is owned by Gino’s cousin Elena and her husband Piero for drinks. Piero is an avid fan of the old fiat 500 and runs a club. I let him know that I own one of the newer models back in the UK and he gives me a bag with all of the models on. They are very welcoming and offer food and accommodation right in the middle of the beautiful forest.

After this we head back to their village. The weather clears up a little so we walk around Marjorie and Gino’s land. Gino masters the controls on our drone!

Next morning it is time to say goodbye.
