Beyond the Basics: More Types of Coffee
The world of coffee is vast and varied, with unique styles from different cultures and modern trends. Let's explore some other popular and traditional types.
1. Irish Coffee /ˌaɪə.rɪʃ ˈkɒf.i/ A cocktail of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and topped with a layer of thick cream. It's served in a glass and meant to be sipped without stirring.
"After dinner, we warmed up with a rich Irish coffee."
2. Ristretto /rɪˈstret.əʊ/ An even more concentrated version of espresso, made with the same amount of coffee but half the water, resulting in a sweeter, more intense shot.
"For a powerful, short drink, he prefers a ristretto."
3. Cortado /kɔːrˈtɑː.dəʊ/ A Spanish drink made with equal parts espresso and warm milk to "cut" the intensity. It's served in a small glass and has very little foam.
"A cortado is my go-to—it's strong but smooth."
4. Frappuccino /ˌfræp.əˈtʃiː.nəʊ/ A trademarked Starbucks blended beverage of coffee, ice, milk, and flavored syrups, often topped with whipped cream. It's more of a dessert-like coffee drink.
"On a summer day, the kids always ask for a caramel Frappuccino."
5. Chicory Coffee /ˈtʃɪk.ər.i ˈkɒf.i/ A beverage made from the roasted, ground root of the chicory plant, either blended with coffee or used as a caffeine-free substitute. It has a woody, slightly bitter taste.
"In New Orleans, it's traditional to drink coffee blended with chicory."
6. Decaf Coffee /ˌdiːˈkæf ˈkɒf.i/ (short for Decaffeinated Coffee) Coffee that has had at least 97% of its caffeine removed through a chemical, water, or carbon dioxide process.
"I'll have a decaf latte in the evening, please."
7. Greek Coffee /ˌɡriːk ˈkɒf.i/ A traditional method of brewing very finely ground coffee with water and sugar (if desired) in a small pot called a briki. It's served unfiltered, with the grounds settling at the bottom of the cup.
"When in Athens, you must try a strong, foamy Greek coffee."
8. Café au Lait /ˌkæf.eɪ əʊ ˈleɪ/ A French drink of equal parts strong brewed coffee (often filter or French press) and hot steamed milk. Similar to a latte but made with a different coffee base.
"For breakfast in Paris, I enjoyed a bowl of café au lait with a croissant."
9. Arabic Coffee /ˈær.ə.bɪk ˈkɒf.i/ (or Turkish Coffee) A style similar to Greek coffee, often brewed with cardamom and served in small cups from a pot called a cezve. It's a central part of Middle Eastern hospitality.
"Serving Arabic coffee to guests is a sign of welcome."
10. Dalgona Coffee /dalˈɡoʊ.nə ˈkɒf.i/ A trend that went viral in 2020, made by whipping equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water into a creamy foam, which is then spooned over cold or hot milk.
• "We spent the lockdown making Dalgona coffee at home."
11. Nitro Coffee /ˌnaɪ.trəʊ ˈkɒf.i/ Cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen gas and served on tap from a keg. It has a smooth, creamy texture and a frothy head, similar to a stout beer.
• "The nitro coffee from that new cafe is incredibly smooth and creamy."
