Three years ago, it was due to train and underground strikes, that I traveled from London Bridge to the O2 by Uber Boat to see Diana Ross in concert. This time, I just wanted to experience the boat trip again. It’s such a pleasant way to get to this venue.
After the pressing heat the day before, temperatures had gone down and a pleasant breeze was blowing across the city. Walking to the O2, it was a familiar sight to see guests arriving, dressed in colourful, stylish summer and evening attire.
At Costa’s, I had an iced cappucino and some snacks while observing the people. It was here, that my Ross-friend Dustin and I finally met. After many years of creating videos together for Diana Ross fan meetings and dance parties, it was so nice to see each face to face at last.
Entering the O2 brings on that familiar feeling of excitement. Realising it’s really going to happen tonight, seeing Miss Ross once again, and everyone being excited and elated.
My seat was in block 212, row D, at the aisle. I couldn’t believe how close this was to the stage. A side view and really close to the floor seats.
Before the show, I was able to meet Francesco and his husband Lorenzo. Bart, who I hadn’t seen since the Symphonica shows in 2009, and Dustin found us and it was a lovely get-together.
Seated next to me was a young woman who was seeing Diana for the very first time. She was so excited to finally see her idol. In front of us were two men, who got on their feet during Diana’s entrance and didn’t intend to sit down any time soon. My neighbour made it clear to them that they were blocking her view. Thankfully, they were very understanding and considerate after that. One of them remained seated from that moment on. The other guy wanted to dance so badly and stepped aside into the aisle. A few more visitors came down the aisle to have a closer view. Security later urged them to go back to their seats. For our dancing front neighbour, we asked if he could remain in the aisle, so we could have a clear view of the stage. I checked with my neighbours in the row behind me if this was alright for them too. 'A few more steps down' they gestured. He complied. This worked well for everyone. It's so nice when fellow visitors are considerate of one another.
Miss Ross looked fantastic and sounded wonderful. She had incredible energy and fun. It always seems London is like coming home for her, and the audience gave her such love and appreciation. The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the London Youth Chamber Choir gave this evening a special dimension of grandeur, also with the huge curtains draped around the stage. An amazing, two hour show.
It was a special gift, to be able to use the footage which Francesco and Lorenzo filmed, to add to my side view footage. Making the close-up scenes gradually fade in and out reminded me of the tv specials of Miss Ross from the early 80s, which Steve Binder directed and produced so brilliantly. As an homage to those specials, I added 'serious-looking' end credits to this concert registration. With many thanks to Francesco and Lorenzo, for making this project extra special and unforgettable. I hope this will be a joy for many Diana Ross fans out there to come back to every once in a while.
