Utah is experiencing one of its best winters in 20 years, with January rainfall 200 percent above average. This year's snowpack was also compared to levels not seen since 1984 and 1997.
Utah is now guaranteed to have above-average snowpack, according to the National Resources Conservation Service. Every additional inch of snow between now and the start of the melt increases snow volume and increases the likelihood that runoff will be used to fill reservoirs.
In the southwestern part of the state, snowpack is currently 185 percent above average, though that could change as a new storm system rolls into the state Tuesday night and later in the week.
"This is our year of opportunity," said Candice Hasenyag, director of the Department of Water Resources, in a statement released Tuesday. "To make the most of our abundant snowpack, we must continue to use our water wisely. This is not going to be a good snow year.
