The History of the 2000 Presidential Election

The 2020 election has somewhat come to a close, but with recounts, legal battles,
accusations of voter fraud, and confusion regarding the integrity of mail-in voting, it seems the
results of this election are a long way from being a closed book in the public opinion. You may
have heard this election compared to the presidential election from the turn of the millenia, the
year 2000. In which Democrat candidate Al Gore faced off against Republican candidate
George W. Bush. We obviously know the results of this election now, but for the first 37 days
after November 3rd, Americans held their breath as a confusing election continued to take place
long after election day passed. So let’s talk about what happened two decades ago, during that
fateful election.
So how did the 2000 Presidental Election become such a memorable time in most
American’s lives? Well, it’s sort of a weird story. The votes were being spread almost evenly
across the board, creating one of the closest elections in the country’s history. Voters anxiously
watched the news as the final swing state, Florida was neck in neck throughout the night. Gore
narrowly pulled through, leading Bush by a slight margin and many outlets prematurely named
Gore the next president of the United States, both the growing Gore votes and exit polls in
Florida showed that Gore was all but guaranteed to win the state.
However, as the night churned along, Bush ended up sweeping through with a narrow
lead, beating Gore and essentially defeating the chances of the Gore campaign to have any
chance of winning the election. Networks began to renounce their claims and instead marked
Florida as undecided, leaving a nation of confused voters wondering why the supposed winner
of the presidential election had no more claim to the throne. Networks then claimed Bush the
winner of the state and the Election, in which he announced his victory of the entire race,
alongside a concession from Gore that was soon after rescinded as more votes came in and
significantly closed the gap between the candidates. Sound a bit chaotic yet?
The lead was brought to less than 2,000 votes, triggering a recount throughout the state,
making it impossible to declare a winner on election night. The lead between the two candidates
changed nine times throughout the course of the election, making it hard to guess who could’ve
possibly won the state, and the election. Gore called for a recount, stating that it had to be done
by hand due to a number of different reasons he believed that the machines were counting the
ballots incorrectly. The case was then tossed back and forth between the Florida supreme court
and the U.S Supreme court, as the U.S was attempting to stay uninvolved but believed that
there was no standard for the recount, and requesting another recount from the state.
After many weeks, the court decided that the time had run out to create a remedy and
the U.S Supreme court moved to vote on who the winner of the state was based on the most
current votes. What followed is the most controversial Supreme court rulings in American
History, as in a 5-4 vote, the courts ruled Bush to be the winner of Florida, and by extension the
entire Presidential election. All we can hope for now, is that the 2020 election proves to be less
of a giant mess than the 2000 election was.
