Arsinoitherium translates to "Arsinoe's beast," named after Queen Arsinoe II of Egypt because the first fossils were found near the ruins of her ancient palace in the Fayum Depression. But here is the craziest part: unlike modern rhinos, whose horns are made of compressed keratin (the same stuff as your hair and fingernails), the massive twin horns of Arsinoitherium were made of solid bone. They were hollow on the inside to reduce weight and were likely covered in a layer of skin and rich blood vessels, much like the ossicones of modern giraffes.
