Wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) weaving an egg sac next to Coombe Pond at RSPB Arne, Dorset, UK - 19th September 2019, 09:07 BST.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Argiope bruennichi had already laid her eggs and almost completed the egg sac by 9.07am. Manipulating the webbing with her rear legs alternately (presumably by feel) and using her pedipalps to secure previous strands at the same time, she worked her way around the egg sac to completion by early afternoon and then ensured that the egg sac was securely fixed to neighbouring stems before she took a well-earned rest for the remainder of the day.
[The mother typically lays several hundred eggs in an egg sac along with 'nurse' eggs which are unfertilised and eaten by the hatching spiderlings. Spiderlings hatch in 2-3 weeks but remain in the egg sac until Spring when they emerge and disperse.]
Filmed using a Canon 7D Mark II with Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS II USM lens.
