MCRA Pharmacist Paul Mavor chats to Dr Reggie Gaudino

Dr. Reginald “Reggie” Gaudino, PhD is a molecular geneticist and plant biotechnologist specialising in cannabis genomics, phytochemistry, and plant breeding. With more than two decades of experience spanning biotechnology, intellectual property, and cannabis science, he is widely recognised as a leading authority on the genetics and biochemical pathways that influence cannabinoid and terpene production.

Dr. Gaudino earned his PhD in Molecular Biology from the State University of New York at Buffalo before spending over 20 years working as a patent scientist and patent agent across several national law firms and technology companies. This rare combination of scientific expertise and intellectual property strategy later positioned him as a pioneer in cannabis biotechnology.

In 2014, he joined Steep Hill, where he led scientific initiatives that produced one of the first DNA-based diagnostic assays for cannabis, enabling genetic identification and standardisation of cannabis varieties. His work generated multiple patents and helped advance genomic tools for the emerging cannabis industry.

In 2019, Dr. Gaudino joined Front Range Biosciences as Vice President of R&D and Director of Intellectual Property, leading multidisciplinary teams developing advanced breeding programs for cannabis and hemp.

Today he serves as Director of the Cannabis Research Institute at the University of Illinois Chicago, advancing evidence-based cannabis research and policy.
