“Once I save some more money, I’ll start my business.” “If I only had more money, then I would start a business.” Have you ever heard someone say that? Or maybe you’ve said it yourself. There’s a huge myth in business that the more money you have to start a business, the more successful your business will be. In a perfect world, more money is typically better when starting a business, but in practice it’s usually not true. In fact, when someone starts a business with a lot of money, that sometimes lead’s to a business’s failure. Here are the 3 reasons why having too much money may actually cause your new business to fail.
1. Lack of urgency and drive
When someone starts a business with a lot of money set aside, her urgency and drive is typically weak because she knows that she can live a very long time from her savings and isn’t depending on the earnings of her new business to make ends meet. Starting a business takes a lot of work, commitment, and dedication every single day. However, if she knows she’ll be ok financially for a very long time without the business’s return, then she’ll lose a lot of the required inner drive to get the business off the ground and then turning a profit. She typically won’t work the long hours, do the different things, make a fool out of herself (as per the natural process of learning sales). On the other hand, someone who’s reliant on her new business’s return to make ends will typically be much more driven because she’s put himself in the position of be successful or starve.
2. Bad initial investments
When an entrepreneur starts a business with a lot of money, she naturally won’t: start out small, develop a proven concept, make adjustments, and then steadily grow the business. Instead, she’ll likely lease expensive space, buy expensive equipment, and hire many expensive employees without a proven concept or accounting for likely adjustments in her business model. When an entrepreneur start a business, things change constantly. The strategy will change, the target market may move, products/services come and go. Making adjusting is just part of starting a business; however, when large investments are made in the business early on, all of a sudden change becomes very expensive and painful. Therefore, management starts to resist the obvious changes that should be made and unfortunately they continue down a losing path.
3. Money is thrown at all problems
“When you’re a hammer – everything looks like a nail.” When you start a business with a lot of money , every problem is thought to be solved with money. The machine seems to be printing slowly? Let’s buy a new machine. Employees not working efficiently? Hire more experienced and expensive employees. Money is a tool to get things done, but not every problem can or should be solved with money. Even if the problem could be solved by throwing money at it, many times that’s not the most profitable means to solve the business’s problem.
Although too much money may lead to an entrepreneur’s failure, too little money could also mean that the there’s just not enough runway to get her business off the ground. Clearly, there’s a bell curve, or a sweet spot, where you have just enough money to get the business started, but not too much money where you lose your drive, make bad initial investments, and start throwing money at every problem your business encounters.
