We have become over-dependent on our gadgets that we don’t have time for each other.
Any new gadget introduced in the market leads to the itch of buying it. The first category of users is of the people who must buy the latest as soon as it is launched. They have the iPhone 14 but must buy one when the 15 is introduced in the market. The second type is of those people who go with the plan discounts.
We have all the gadgets at home sometimes even twice in number. Why is there an addiction to new gadgets especially for men? My theory is that men have very few outlets for spending. Women for example can do their nails, buy jewelry, and buy new purses. For a man, not into drinking or smoking, what are the avenues for spending money? gadgets are the obvious answer. I can’t think of any other reason for it.
Our dependence on gadgets has reached scary proportions, compounded by the addition of new apps every day. Is there a new message in WhatsApp? Are there any emails in my inbox? I see none but still must pull it down to refresh it just in case I may be missing that inconsequential message which may pop up anytime. This is primarily because we do, not want to be bored. I have seen people take their phones inside bathrooms and use them while doing their stuff. Those 15 – 20 minutes we cannot spare for things so mundane.
Now we have gone to the second level where we have made our children dependent on these gadgets. This is a scarier fact. When they are growing, we put a cartoon on TV so that they are distracted and watch while we can be in our app refresh world. Later we buy them their own gadgets so that they transition properly into this addiction. My daughter was a picky eater and hence the cartoon was the time when she would watch and we could stuff a spoonful of food inside her mouth. She soon transitioned from those cartoons to movies, serials, texting, and apps.
At other times when we are not sitting as a family we are in our rooms. The kids have taken it to the next level too. They close their rooms and are inside their rooms. If I go to my kid’s room and leave the door open by mistake, I get a shout back to close the door on my way back. When I think of my childhood, I can’t think of a time I was in my room or even inside my home we were always outside playing. Maybe our mental health was a little better due to it. Now, this tech addiction is leading to a whole new crisis of mental health. Small kids are having anxiety and depression.
Tech gadgets have also increased misuse by other people. Let me explain what I mean by this. Take the phone for example. I receive more spam calls than I receive actual calls. These spam calls have become such a nuisance that I don’t pick up any call that I don’t recognize. I am sure I may be missing some important calls in the process but I can’t go through those car warranty expiry reminders to get calls from IRS for being delinquent on my taxes. Yes, I have got one too.
The next thing in tech addiction is the increase of AI. I am all for the use of technology. Every other day I get emails about my user ID and passwords being part of the data being sold on the dark web. Spamming ads based on your browsing to chatbots which are the new thing now. People-to-people interactions are down. We have become a reclusive society. How many times are we excited when someone pops into our home? Boredom is important, we need to get back to that state of being bored. it's the only time when our mind is at rest. Boredom is good. Let’s strive for that bored society again. Let's get our sanity back. Let's get happy.
