Deaths from oral cancer are higher than from cervical, testicular, laryngeal or thyroid cancer. Oral Cancer is the 6th, most common cancer in the US and is more prevalent than skin cancer and 3x more prevalent than cervical cancer.
In America, one person dies from oral cancer every hour of every day. This is the fifth year in a row in which there has been an increase in the rate of occurrence of oral cancers, in 2007 there was a major jump of over 11% in that single year.
Oral cancer is one of the few forms of cancer that has not experienced a significantly decreased mortality rate in the past 30 years. Approximately 40,000 people in the US will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer in 2012. This includes those cancers that occur in the mouth itself, in the very back of the mouth/oropharynx, and on the exterior lip of the mouth. Worldwide the problem is far greater, with new cases annually exceeding 640,000. Clinical data suggests that many are contracting the disease not due to tobacco or/and alcohol use, but due to HPV or other causes. Moreover, the majority of oral cancers are detected in late stages, for which the 5-year survival rate is barely over 20%. As a result, health experts are now advising all adults to have oral cancer examinations on an annual basis. We are pleased to announce that our dental practice, http://www.PVsmiles.com has enhanced our ability to detect oral cancer at early stages, as well as to detect abnormal tissue at pre-cancerous stages with the use of a revolutionary technology, the VELscope® Oral Cancer Screening System, which we are now using adjunctively to our conventional white light oral cancer examination. The VELscope is the only device cleared by the FDA for its ability to help detect lesions that may not be visible under traditional white light examinations, including pre-cancerous and cancerous growths. Thus the key is early detection, find problems before they can be seen with the traditional, palpation and visual white light examination. Oral cancer cases that were detected early have a 5 year survival rate of 85%.
