In this video from the Shouse Life shop, we tackle a common AWD problem on a Nissan — a bad rear differential coupler. The plan seemed simple: order an affordable replacement online, bolt it in, and get the AWD system working again.
The rear AWD coupler is the component that transfers torque to the rear wheels when the system detects wheel slip, helping the vehicle maintain traction in snow, mud, and other slippery conditions.
But things didn’t go as planned…
We install an aftermarket coupler ordered online, only to discover the brand-new part is junk and doesn’t fix the issue. Instead of giving up, we tear it back apart and replace it again — this time with a genuine OEM Nissan unit to finally get the AWD system working the way it should.
In this video you’ll see:

Why the cheap part didn’t work

Real-world lessons about cheap vs OEM parts
If you work on your own vehicles or buy salvage cars like we do, this is a good reminder that sometimes the “cheap fix” ends up costing more time and money.
