The Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, VA has 3 historic farms that were originally built in Europe and reassembled in Virginia! In this travel vlog, we'll show you these incredible farms from England, Ireland, and Germany, while also making friends with cute (and not-so-cute) farm animals. We couldn't believe we were in Virginia while visiting this unique museum!
The Frontier Culture Museum is one of the most unique museums in Virginia and is in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. This living history museum is a great place to visit to see what rural life was like in 17th & 18th Century Europe.
The first farm we toured is the oldest European farm at the museum. The farm was built in West Yorkshire, England in the 1650s. We'll share with you more about what the farmer, and his family, did who lived in this English farmhouse. It's definitely not the lifestyle we originally imagined!
Next, we explored the Ireland farm, which is complete with an Irish cottage, stone fences, and rolling hills. We truly felt like we were in Ireland! This Irish farm is from Northern Ireland and was built in the 1740s. Although it was a farm, the occupants would have made most of their money from something other than farming. There's a whole room in the house dedicated to this money-maker.
Lastly, we toured the German farm. This home was for peasant farmers from Southwestern Germany in the 1690s. We were shocked by how big the house was and were even more surprised by the huge pig near the house!
We can't believe we used to pass this amazing (and underrated) museum in Virginia everyday, when we lived in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia! We're SO glad we finally visited it and were able to travel back in time to rural life in Europe!
Which European house was your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
