Residents worry about safety after a shooting at local park

A shooting at Arthur Sears Park on Sunday evening left a 17-year-old and a 21-year-old injured, with one in serious condition, prompting growing safety concerns among local residents.
The Abilene Police Department responded to the incident at 8:30 p.m., and both victims were quickly transported to the hospital.
A nearby neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons, said, "She has noticed an increase in younger people hanging out at Sears Park since the closing of Cobb Park in 2024." She added that the rise in violence is "very disturbing to their neighborhood."
As violence appears to be on the rise, community members are taking extra precautions.
Church members from a nearby congregation, unaware of the incident, said they always leave in groups to ensure their safety.
Police reported that neither of the individuals involved in the shooting has been willing to speak with investigators. The Abilene Police Department stated that the investigation is ongoing.
