Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will once again be adapted for the silver screen. The “monster” has appeared in hundreds of movies and tv shows and is one of the most recognizable of the Universal Monsters from the 1930s. The newest version was directed by Guillermo del Toro. Shelley’s original novel was written in 1818, but she revised it at least five times during her life. Elisa Beshero-Bondar, professor of digital humanities at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College, was part of a group of scholars that compiled all of the versions into the Frankenstein Variorum, an online resource showing the changes and even including some of Shelley’s hand-written notes. With the new movie coming out, Bondar reflects on Frankenstein’s enduring legacy and why the text remains relevant today.
Originally recorded on Oct. 14, 2025.
