Located on the grounds of Errol Airfield in Perthshire, Scotland, sits a forgotten relic of Britain’s Cold War past, the Fairey Gannet XG882.
Once part of the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm, this aircraft served during the 1950s–1970s in anti-submarine warfare and training roles, operating from Royal Navy aircraft carriers as part of Britain’s maritime defence during the Cold War. Its mission: to detect and engage enemy submarines and protect the fleet.
After its retirement in 1976, XG882 was brought to Errol Airfield for preservation by the Scottish Aircraft Preservation Society. But when plans for a museum faded, the aircraft was left exposed to the elements and now stands as a haunting Cold War time capsule.
