Delhi High Court has taken a major step on May 5 in the alleged excise policy case. This decision is expected to impact Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Durgesh Pathak.
After raising objections against Justice Swarnakanta Sharma, all three leaders refused to appear before the court. In response, the court has ordered the appointment of three Amicus Curiae to represent them. An Amicus Curiae is a court-appointed lawyer who assists when an accused does not have legal representation.
On the scheduled hearing day, neither the leaders nor their lawyers appeared, prompting the court to take this step. The court also stated that CBI arguments will only be heard after appointing these lawyers.
Additionally, the court has temporarily closed the option for the accused to file replies. Any new submissions will not be accepted on record.
Earlier, Arvind Kejriwal had questioned the impartiality of Justice Sharma and requested her removal from the case. However, the judge refused to step aside, stating she would not bow to such allegations.
This hearing is based on a petition filed by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), challenging the acquittal of the accused in the Delhi Excise Policy case.
