In 1992, Steve Jobs stood in front of a room of MIT business students and admitted he'd spent ten years focused on the wrong kind of productivity.

Not the wrong product. The wrong kind of productivity.

He'd been reading Paul Strassmann — then CIO of the Pentagon — who had studied hundreds of companies and found a pattern. The underperformers poured their IT money into management productivity: email, documents, presentations, reports. The companies that got real returns spent it on operational productivity: making the actual work faster, cheaper, better.

Thirty years later, we've stopped making the distinction at all. IT spend keeps climbing. Productivity doesn't move. And then we act surprised when a Copilot rollout changes nothing.
