MEMORIAL OF ST. AGNES OF ROME
CECIL FRANCES ALEXANDER WAS AN ANGLO-IRISH POET, AUTHOR, AND SONGWRITER, BORN IN DUBLIN IN 1818. She started writing as a child, having grown up in a privileged military family. In 1850 she married Rev. William Alexander, an Anglican minister, who later was appointed the Bishop of Derry and Archbishop of Armagh. she continued writing and devoting herself to serving the poor and disadvantaged. In all, she wrote 400 hymn texts, many of them preserved in Irish and Anglican hymnals. She died in 1895.
The familiar music to this hymn was composed in 1888 by William Henry Monk.
