Operation Cobra was the brainchild of General Bradley. It was to use a massif bombing raid to smash the German resistance then break out.
Set to take place just after the liberation of St Lo, it was postponed several times, then "started" on the 24th July.
The 9th 4th and 30th divisions were to operate the "break-in" then the 1st division and the 2nd and 3rd Armoured divisions were to break-out.
The 24th July was a false start which was costly in American friendly fire casualties. The 2nd armored finally advanced 15 miles in 5 days. A record.
