This is by far my favorite event in the history of the Turtle Back Zoo Railroad! In this video, you will observe the two locomotives, 199 and 306, swapping train colors for the day! Here's what happened:
Due to an issue that will put 382 out of service for several days, 199 and 306 were powering the trains today. However, instead of the usual lineup with 306 on Blue and 199 on Red, the locomotives swapped colors, with 199 on Blue and 306 on Red. As far as I am aware, the blue engine hasn't run with the red train prior to this day. The reason for this is because of 199's age and overall power rating. While 199 does have enough power to pull five (as seen in my last railfanning video), the crew decided to put 199 onto the blue train since it still has four cars to reduce risks of the train stalling. This led to the red train being pulled by 306, which contains a more powerful engine enough to take on five, although 382 is by far the most powerful locomotive.
As of this video, I have officially caught all possible combinations on the railroad! This is my second time seeing 199 pulling a blue train, and the first time seeing 306 on the red train. However the rarest swap of all time will have to be 306 on red and 382 on blue. Last week, 382 was also in charge of the blue train, so it is now safe to say that I have caught all locomotives on both trains at least once. These four videos were filmed at Turnaround Hill, a straight section within the middle, and at the beginning of the route exiting the zoo.
As of July 21, 2020, 382 is now back in service, so consider yourself super lucky if you saw this arrangement! Unfortunately a few days after this video, 199 suffered a major mechanical issue, so as a result, this will likely be my last video of 199 for now, as it is currently undergoing an overhaul that will probably not finish until I return to college. Hopefully I will be able to ride behind it at least once before it is retired, although I believe it will be around for several more years to go before retirement, depending on the outcome of the overhaul.
On a side note, for anyone wondering why the red train only has plexiglass on the first car, it's because the plexiglass on the other four cars were removed after several of them broke due to a manufacturing defect. The new ones were ordered not too long ago, so they will be installed once they arrive. Until then, the older red cars require passengers to sit in every other row.
Enjoy the video!
