BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A historical marker related to award-winning author Ernest J. Gaines in Pointe Coupee Parish will be rededicated Sunday, years after the original was stolen.
The original historical marker for the 400-year-old “Miss Jane Pittman Oak,” which was the inspiration for Gaines’ novel, was stolen in October 2022. A $500 reward had been set up after its disappearance.
The new marker was purchased through the collaboration of the Pointe Coupée Historical Society, the Albert Family Foundation, the Curet Family, and donors of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation.
Gaines, a Pointe Coupee Parish native who died in 2019 at the age of 86, wrote the fictional novel “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” about the life of a 100-year-old woman who was born into slavery and lived through the civil rights movement.
