On Wednesday, April 9th, the DePaul Humanities Center, in partnership with the School of the Art Institute’s Department of Liberal Arts and the University of Chicago’s Center for East Asian Studies, hosted a screening of the documentary film, “I Am A Comedian” at the Gene Siskel Film Center followed by an in-person discussion and Q&A with documentary subject Daisuke Muramoto and a video greeting from the director of the film, Fumiari Hyuga.
“I Am A Comedian” follows Daisuke Muramoto, an award-winning Japanese comedian whose celebrated success quickly dwindled after his comedy took a decisive turn for the political. This film raises questions about freedom of speech, the entertainment industry, and using humor to confront injustices while navigating criticism and personal struggles. It thus sheds light on both the realities of political censorship and the transformative powers of documentary and comedy.
