In discussions of classical Japanese cinema, Mikio Naruse usually ranks a convenient footnote behind the internationally recognized Ozu, Mizoguchi and Kurosawa. Though popular inland, his style, or perceived lack thereof, was seen as incompatible with Western audiences, but his feel for the pulse of society remains unmatched, by those three masters, or by anyone for that matter.
